Writ seeks stay on establishing tourism spot on Mahananda river land

Star Online Report

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) challenging legality of the government’s decision to establish a tourism spot in a land adjacent to Mahananda river in Chapainawabganj.

Tufani Begum, a resident of Chapainawabganj, recently submitted the petition praying to the HC to stay the government’s decision.

In the petition, she said the government has decided to build a tourism centre on a 45-acre of land adjacent to Sheikh Hasina Bridge in the river although the HC in a verdict earlier banned encroachment of river and construction of any structure in the river land.

Petitioner’s lawyer Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze today moved the petition before the HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice SM Maniruzzaman for its hearing.

After the hearing, the bench fixed September 29 for resuming the hearing on the petition, Deputy Attorney General Samarendranath Bishwas told The Daily Star.

He said the land where the tourism centre is supposed to be established is a Khash and arable land according to the relevant records.

“We will place necessary documents before the court during its next hearing,” DAG Samarendra added.
