5 killed, 12 injured in road accidents
Five people were killed and 12 were injured in separate road accidents across the country over the last two days, report our correspondents.
In Pirojpur Sadar upazila, a Jubo League leader died in a road accident yesterday, reports our Pirojpur correspondent.
The deceased is Saiful Islam Jemi (35) from Dakkhin Sankarpasha village in the upazila. He was the organising secretary of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Jubo League.
Quoting locals, Md Nurul Islam Badal, officer-in-charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, said Jemi was riding his motorbike with a friend on Pirojpur-Parerhat road at Mollikbari area around 12pm. The accident occurred after he suddenly overtook a truck running in front of him. However, he had to break as a locally improvised vehicle was coming from the opposite side.
As he stood on the road, the same truck he overtook hit his vehicle from behind. This left Jemi, his friend, and a passerby badly injured. Locals immediately took the injured to Pirojpur district hospital, but on-duty doctors declared Jemi dead.
After the accident, cops seized the truck and detained its driver and helper, the OC said. Filing of a case was under process, he added.
Deceased Jemi had at least five criminal cases, including one for murder, filed with Pirojpur and Indurkani Police Stations, said OC Badal.
Locals said alleged Jemi used to run a gang and was involved with extortion, selling drugs, assault and other criminal activities.
In the capital, a woman was killed and five others, including four of her family members, were injured in a road accident at Mahisasi area of Dhamrai early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Zohura Begum (32), reports our Savar correspondent.
The accident occurred at Mahisasi Bazar area around 11am when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of SB Link lost control and hit an auto-rickshaw carrying five members of Zohura’s family, said Dhamrai police. The collision left six people injured, including Zohura, in critical condition.
The injured were rushed to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared Zohura dead. The others are cleared of danger, police said.
The bus was seized and its driver Kaium has been detained.
In another accident in Thakurgaon, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion passenger was injured in a road accident at Chandanchahat village in Ranishankoil upazila on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Motiur Rahman (30) of Baliadangi upazila of the district, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
OC of Ranishankoil Police Station Abdul Mannan said the accident occurred around 7:30pm when a pick-up van hit a motorbike from the opposite direction, leaving Motiur dead on the spot and pillion passenger Raihan (28) critically injured.
On information, police and fire-fighters went to the spot and took the injured to Baliadangi Upazila Health Complex, from where he was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Police seized the vehicle but its driver managed to escape.
A case was filed in this connection, the OC said.
In Madaripur, two people were killed and four others were injured in two separate road accidents in Madaripur over the last two days, reports our Faridpur correspondent.
In Kalkini upazila, Md Karim Khan (25), a three-wheeler driver, died on the spot after a Barishal-bound bus of BRTC collided head-on with his vehicle at Kornarpara area yesterday morning. The collision also injured three other passengers, quoting locals, Abdul Ohab, OC of Dashar Police Station, said.
In Shibchar, Sahadat Kholifa (22) died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing it on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway at Bararkandi on Sunday night. This killed Shahadat on the spot and injured another, quoting locals, Abir Hossain, ASP of Shibchar circle said.
