A Chattogram court today sent a sub-inspector's wife to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for her amassing illegal wealth of Tk 1.38 crore.

Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ashfaqur Rahaman sent Gulzar Begum, wife of SI Nawab Ali, to jail after she surrendered before the court seeking bail, said Public Prosecutor Advocate Mahmudul Islam.

"The couple had secured bail in the case from the High Court earlier but they did not appear before a lower court on completion of their bail period. As a result, arrest warrants were issued against them," said the PP.

The ACC on March 10, 2019 filed a case against Nawab and Gulzar after they were unable to show the source of their income for the illegally amassed wealth.

Nawab is currently stationed at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police in Dhaka, said the PP.

ACC Deputy Director Ali Akbar (investigation officer) said police will arrest Nawab as it was their duty.

During the investigation, names of two Chattogram Tax Office staffers were included and later the ACC deputy director submitted the charge sheet in the case implicating four, including the couple, on October 7 last year, reports our Chattogram correspondent.

Later, the court issued arrest warrants against the four in connection with the case, said PP, adding the arrest warrants for the two tax staffers will be sent to the concerned police stations.
