Only a handful of contemporary writers and publishers produce work for child readers, although there is no alternative to good books to broaden children's mind, said speakers at a book launching ceremony in Dhaka yesterday.

However, piquing children's interest in books will require engaging stories, aesthetic print and good binding, they said.

The ceremony "Chhotoder Anandabarshiki" to launch publications of a series of five children's books by Chandrabatee Academy with the support of AB Bank was held at Bangla Academy.

The fourth installment of the series features nursery rhymes, short stories, novels, travelogues, science fiction, non-fiction, history and folklore.

Besides the writings of litterateurs like Al Mahmud, Sukumar Barua, and Nirmalendu Goon, the books are designed and illustrated by artists including Hashem Khan, Rafiqun Nabi and Biren Shome.

Prof Anisuzzaman wrote an essay on the etymology of Bangla words.

"I believe, any child in possession of the series would find it hard to decide which book to read first," said Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman.

The series will cost Tk 2,400 without commission.

Writer Selina Hossain and AB Bank Chairman Wahidul Haque were among others present.
