One of the four burglars today confessed to looting Tk 80 lakh from National Bank on May 10, adding that he had received Tk 25,000 for his part in the job.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Eleas Meah recorded the confessional statement of Md Babul Mia after Monirul Islam Mridha, sub-inspector of the Detective Branch of police, also the investigation officer of the case, produced him at his chamber.

After recording his statement, Babul was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

In his statement, Babul said he along with their gang leader Hannan alias Briefcase Hannan, and three others went to the National Bank Limited's branch in the capital's Islampur to commit burglary on May 10.

They saw a microbus in front of the bank, in which a bank official was keeping money collected from the bank.

At one point, the official went inside the bank while the security guard and driver remained in the car.

Hannan and his associates approached the guard and driver, and started talking to them. At one stage, the driver also went inside the bank. With the security guard distracted, Hannan took the money from the car. He then went to his house in Tolarbagh.

After two days, Hannan gave each of his three associates Tk 25,000 and kept the rest of the money with him.

Detectives yesterday arrested the four from different parts of the city in connection with a case filed over the missing money.

DB officials also recovered Tk 60 lakh of the looted money and seized two firearms during the drive.

Three others of the gang including the ringleader Hannan are now on a three-day remand in the case filed with Kotwali Police Station.
