The government yesterday upgraded the rank of the Bangladesh Navy chief to admiral from vice admiral and that of the Bangladesh Air Force chief to air chief marshal from air marshal.

In presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, security affairs adviser to the prime minister, and Lt Gen Anwar Hussain, the acting army chief, adorned navy chief Muhammad Farid Habib with the new rank badge of admiral and air chief Abu Esrar with the new rank badge of air chief marshal, according to a press release.

Earlier, the ranks of navy and air chiefs were equivalent to that of a lieutenant general in the army. On September 7, the government made the three top ranks equal.

Now the three chiefs will have a fixed salary of Tk 86,000, the same as the cabinet secretary and the principal secretary to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
