Rapes top ASK's human rights violation chart

Rape statistics topped the human rights violation chart of the last three months, with 146 women falling victim to the crime, according to an Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) report.

The rights body gathered the data on different human rights violation from news reports of national dailies and information from ASK staff from different parts of the country.

According to the report, 49 women were gang-raped, 10 were killed and two committed suicide after rape. Attempts of rape were carried on another 15.

Ninety cases were filed in relation to rape related crimes and 98 of the victims were aged between 0 and 18 years.

Violence against children was also high; wherein 370 children were often subjected to cruel and horrific torture and 152 children were killed.

However, verdict of four child killing cases, which occurred during 2007-2014, were given in the last three months and at least 10 people were sentenced to death.

There were 32 deaths in custody and crossfire by law enforcers, said the report.

Out of the 32, 15 died from Rapid Action Battalion's crossfire, eight from police, four from detective branch's crossfire, one from police torture and one was shot by Border Guard Bangladesh.

Two people fell ill in custody and died, while another died mysteriously. Another 19 died in jail custody.

Thirty-five people died from 280 incidents of political violence between January and March while 3,878 were injured. Fourteen died from lynching, and four from Indian Border Security Force's bullets. The report also elaborates on acid attacks, sexual harassment, violence against domestic help, domestic violence, violence for dowry, torture due to fatwa and arbitration, attacks on Hindus, enforced disappearances, journalist harassment and imposition of Section-144.
