RU student remanded over rape of fellow student

A Rajshahi court remanded a student of Rajshahi University (RU) for two days in a case filed on charges of raping and blackmailing a female student of the university.

Judge Selim Reza of Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court-1 granted the two-day remand, when the accused appeared for the hearing yesterday afternoon.

The main accused, Mahfuzur Rahman Sharod (22), is a second-year student of economics.

Four of Sharod’s associates -- Rafsan, Plabon, Jibon and Joy -- were arrested by Rajshahi police, confirmed SM Masud Parvez, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station.

The OC said, on January 27, a female student of the university filed a case against six people from Kazla area for raping and blackmailing.

Of the accused, Rafsan, Plabon and Sharod were arrested on the day of filing the case, while Jibon and Joy were arrested on February 7 from Kazla.

Police also recovered a few mobile phones containing evidence of the crime from them, he added.

According to the case statement, on January 24, Mahfuzur Rahman took the girl to a hostel and raped her while his associates filmed it. They then tried to use the video clip to blackmail Tk 50,000 from her.

Then the girl informed her parents about the incident and filed the case.
