1,000 villagers sued for beating 4 'robbers' dead

At least 1,000 villagers have been sued on charge of beating four alleged robbers dead at Chowdhurygangi in Sadar upazila of the district on Saturday.

Shah Alam, sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, filed the case on Saturday night.

Another case was filed against 10/12 people in connection with robbery, said Nazimuddin, officer-in-charge of the PS.

Of the deceased, two were identified as Khokon alias Yeasin, 38, of Chattar village in Boalmari upazila, and Tushar Mir, 32, of Charkandi village in the upazila.

The incident took place around 4:30am on Saturday when an alleged gang of 8/10 looted five houses at Char Madhabdia union in Sadar upazila.

Hearing screams of the family members, villagers rushed there and chased the 'robbers', said Tuhinur Rahman, chairman of Char Madhabdia Union Parishad, adding that locals managed to catch two of them at Chowdhurykanda and two others at Azhar Mandaler Dangi under Ishan Gopalpur union.

The villagers gave them a good beating, leaving them dead on the spot, said the chairman.

Four villagers were also injured when the gang attacked them with sharp weapons. They received treatment at a local hospital.

Kamruzzaman, additional superintendent of police, said the four were killed in a mob beating.

Police also recovered a pistol, three bullets and a mobile phone SIM card from the spots, he said.

All the deceased were members of an organised gang of robbers, said the ASP.
