3 get life for killing day labourer

A court here yesterday sentenced three people to life imprisonment for killing a day labourer in the district in 2008.

The convicts are Rashidul Islam Chowdhury, 30, son of Idris Ali, Safi Chowdhury, 50, son of late Dabir Uddin and Saju Chowdhury, 34, son of Mahbul Hossain. They hail from Ronochandi Bazar village in Kishoreganj upazila of the district.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. In default, they are to suffer six

months more in jail.

According to prosecution, Mahamud, a day labourer of the area leased a piece of land from another villager and started cultivation there.

On March 14, 2008, Rashidul, Saju and Safi along with others tried to grab the land.

As Mahamud tried to resist them, they beat him up,, leaving him dead on the spot.

Halima Begum, wife of the deceased, filed a case with Kishoreganj Police Station against five people, including Rashidul, Saju and Safi the same day.

After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mahbubul Alam handed down the verdict.
