59 BNP-Jamaat men arrested in 5 districts

At least 59 BNP-Jamaat men were arrested during special drives by law enforcers in Gaibandha, Chapainawabganj, Jhenidah, Bogra and Jessore districts on Monday night and early yesterday, report our correspondents.

In Gaibandha, police arrested 29 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men, raiding different upazilas of the district. Of them, 14 belong to BNP, 11 to Jamaat and the rest to Chhatra Shibir. Police yesterday produced the arrestees in a court that sent them to jail.

In Chapainawabganj, law enforcers arrested seven BNP and three Jamaat-Shibir men from different upazilas of the district early yesterday.

They were arrested from Sadar, Shibganj Nachole and Bholarhat upazilas. Sohrab Ali, vice chairman of Sadar Upazila Parishad and local Jamaat leader, are among the arrestees.

Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, said police arrested Sohrab Ali from Ganka area under Chapainawabagnj municipality on charge of planning subversive activities.

In Jhenidah, 16 Jamaat activists were arrested in five upazilas of the district. Police arrested them, raiding different areas in Kaliganj, Shailkupa, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur and Harinakundo. upazilas on Monday night and early yesterday.

Police said the Jamaat men were arrested on charge of planning subversive activities. 

They were yesterday produced in a Jhenidah court that sent them to jail.

Police arrested three Shibir leader and activists from a students' mess in Thinmatha area of Bogra town early yesterday.

The arrestees are Bogra town unit Shibir leader Abu Shaheen Md Sobhan, and activists Ataur Rahman and Mohammad Ali.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the mess and arrested the Shibir men.

Contacted, Aslam Hossian, inspector (inquiry) of Sadar Police Station, said they were wanted in sabotage cases.

In Benapole, detectives arrested a local BNP leader in connection with a sabotage case from Kamarbari More in Sharsha upazila of Jessore Monday night.

The arrestee is Khairuzzaman Madhu, 55 president of Sharsha upazila unit of BNP.

Police arrested the BNP leader from his house in the area at around 11:30pm.
