BTRC to crack down on illegal radio devices

Star Online Report

Hours into the seizure of an illegally imported robot and several "spy devices" at Dhaka airport, telecom authorities today said they will crack down on illegal radio devices.

Alerting all involved in such businesses, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) issued a notice saying importers of such illegal devices will be brought to book.

"It has been observed in recent times that a section of dishonest businessmen or agencies are importing, distributing, showcasing, renting and selling radio frequency devices like mobile phone handsets, tablet PCs, walkie-talkie sets, bases, repeaters, fixed wireless phones, modems and other devices," the notice said.

"According to the import policy of the country, BTRC approval is mandatory prior to the import of any radio frequency devices," the notice issued by Lt Col Sufi Mohammad Moinuddin, director of Spectrum Management Directorate of BTRC, read.

This morning, the customs officials detained a man when he came to check out a robot and some electronic devices from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
