Clash Over Land: Elderly man dies
An elderly man was killed and six others were injured in an attack allegedly by rivals over a disputed land at Molani Uttar Sonamoti village in Haripur upazila yesterday.
The deceased was Shajahan Ali, 65, son of late Faiz Uddin of the village.
The injured include Shajahan's daughter Parul Begum, 50, daughter-in-law Arishan Begum, 40, grandson Imran, 32, and nephew Sentu, 50.
Additional Superintendent of Police Dewan Lalon Ahmed said one Jobaidul, son of Samsuddin of Moshaldangi village in Ranishankoil upazila, had a longstanding feud with Nuhu Mia, son of Amjad Morol of Molani Uttar Sonamoti village, over 35 bighas of land.
Nuhu Mia and Shajahan jointly planted aman paddy on the disputed land in the current season.
Yesterday morning, when Shajahan went to the land to harvest paddy, Jobaidul and his associates Zaman, Karim and Nurul resisted him that triggered an altercation.
At one stage of altercation, Jobaidul and his men attacked Shajahan with sharp weapons.
Hearing this, Shajahan's family members came forward to rescue him but they also came under the attack.
Later, critically injured Shajahan died at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
Police arrested seven people in this connection, said the ASP.
Preparation to file a case was going on in this connection till filing of this report around 6:00pm yesterday, said Haripur police.
