Classes hampered as storm damages 275 institutions

Academic activities at 275 schools and colleges in 12 upazilas of the district are being seriously hampered as a nor'wester on April 4 caused full or partial damage to the institutions.

Of the institutions, 128 are high schools, 138 primary schools and nine colleges. Twenty eight among them collapsed completely. 

The damage caused by the seasoned storm could go up to Tk 5.5 crore, said the district education department sources. 

Of the high schools, 15 are in Kaholoo, 30 in Shariakandi, 22 in Shajahanpur, 16 in Gabtoli, 18 in Nandigram, seven in Sherpur, 15 in Sonatola and five in Sadar upazilas.

The damage caused by the storm would be worth around Tk 4.6 crore, district secondary education office sources said.

Damage to the primary schools was worth Tk 1 crore, said district primary education office sources.

"Academic activities at 138 primary schools are being seriously hampered as they were fully or partially damaged by the storm that lashed the areas on April 4," said District Primary Education Officer (acting) Rezowan Hossain.  

Contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner (general) Khorshed Alam said they have already taken up initiatives to return normalcy of the schools' academic activities.

He hoped that the academic activities would become normal within ten days.
