Robber killed

A suspected robber was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and police in Kanchatala Bazar area under Kaliganj upazila of the district early yesterday. The dead is Iqbal Hossain, 28, son of Abul Kashem of Arpara village. He is an accused in eight cases, including one for murder, said Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station. Being informed that a gang was preparing to commit a robbery by felling trees on Kaliganj-Chaprail road in Kanchatal area, a patrol police team raided the area at 1:40am. Sensing the presence of the police team, the robbers opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate. Iqbal sustained bullets in the chest and later died at the upazila health complex.
