‘Robber’ killed in Habiganj ‘gunfight’

An alleged robber was killed in a "gunfight" with police in Habiganj town early today.

Identity of the deceased could not be confirmed.

Acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a police team conducted a drive there around 3:30am, said Yeasinul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire at them in Jangalbahula area, prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, a member of the robber gang was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene, the OC said.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Five policemen were also injured in the incident, the police official claimed.

Police recovered seven sharp weapons from the spot.
