Aparna Sen disappointed with changing audience taste, hints at retirement

Renowned filmmaker and actress Aparna Sen has expressed concern over the current state of cinema, hinting at stepping away from direction due to shifting audience preferences.

In a recent interview on the show “Straight Up with Shree”, she said the dominance of television serials is influencing viewers’ taste, leaving little space for meaningful cinema. “Who will I make films for? Where is my audience?” she questioned, adding that the changing landscape has affected her motivation to create new work.

Despite her latest film “The Rapist” earning international recognition, its theatrical release remains uncertain—something the filmmaker described as worrying. She also criticised OTT platforms for prioritising light entertainment over thought-provoking content.

Sen began her acting career with “Teen Kanya”, directed by Satyajit Ray, and made her directorial debut with “36 Chowringhee Lane”, which won a National Film Award. Over the years, she has delivered critically acclaimed films such as “Mr. and Mrs. Iyer”, “Yugant”, and “Goynar Baksho”.

While she has hinted at stepping back from directing, Sen is set to appear in her daughter Konkona Sen Sharma’s web series “Welcome to Khoya Mahal”.
