Country’s first Migration Film Festival launched, submissions open

Arts & Entertainment Desk

The country's first-ever Migration Film Festival has been launched, inviting young filmmakers and students to submit short films that portray real stories related to migration. Film submissions opened on April 1 and will continue until May 25.

According to the organisers, fiction, animation, and documentary films made using any device, including mobile phones, are eligible for submission. However, the central theme must be migration, and films cannot exceed 15 minutes in length.

Alongside the success stories of Bangladesh’s large migrant community, the films may also highlight darker realities such as human trafficking, exploitation by brokers, dangerous sea journeys, deaths abroad, psychological trauma, and the hardships faced by families.

The first prize in the competition is a Sony DSLR camera and lens, while the second prize is a GoPro Creative Kit and the third prize is a GoPro camera. All selected filmmakers will also receive a crest and certificate.

Organisers said the selected films will be screened at the festival, with efforts made to broadcast them on television and other platforms. The film selection and evaluation process will run from May 26 to June 4.

To support participants, online workshops will be held every Saturday during the first six weeks, offering guidance on storytelling, planning, and technical aspects of filmmaking. Interested participants can submit their films through Google Forms and the FilmFreeway platform.

For more details, organisers have advised following the “Deshe-Probash” Facebook page of the BRAC Migration Programme.

The festival is being organised by the BRAC Migration Programme under the “Mass Campaign to Combat Human Trafficking and People Smuggling” initiative, with support from the Australian Government. Its goal is to highlight real migration experiences and raise awareness about the risks of irregular migration.
