Remembering Sharmili Ahmed on her 79th birth anniversary
May 8 marks the birth anniversary of the late acclaimed actress Sharmili Ahmed. She earned widespread admiration through her performances in television dramas and films. During her lifetime, she received immense praise for portraying motherly characters in countless productions. The popular song “Shat ti Ronger Majhe” from the film “Abirbhab” was picturised on her — remains popular to this day.
She began her acting career in 1964 and over the course of her career, she acted with distinction in more than 150 films and over 400 television dramas.
Her fellow artistes shared their memories of her.
Dolly Zahur said, “There is no end to the memories we shared, there are countless of them. She was such a wonderful human being. It is difficult to find someone with such a generous heart. She had an incredible ability to make everyone feel like her own.”
She also shared, “I used to call her didi as she was my senior. I remember once visiting her house in Rajshahi and seeing me her father was so delighted and treated me like his own daughter. Everyone in Rajshahi embraced me with warmth.”
On her qualities, she was short in words, “All I can say is that she was truly a gifted artiste and an exceptionally kind person.”
She further mentioned that Sharmili Ahmed was quite fond of cooking. “I have tasted so many dishes made by her. She would cook for herself and send food for me. If she could not come personally, she would send it through someone else. We also spoke over the phone and met from time to time. It pains me deeply to think that Didi is no longer with us.”
Dilara Zaman shared that Sharmili Ahmed used to call her bubu. “I loved hearing that from her. It is impossible to fully express how wonderful she was as a person. Others will speak about her acting brilliance, because she was an extraordinarily talented artiste. I only want to speak of the beautiful human being she was. It saddens me to think that my dear sister-like companion is no longer here.”
Dilara Zaman further said, “We shared a wonderful relationship. Beyond our acting careers, we developed a close familial bond. I always felt she was a sister to me. After she was diagnosed with cancer, she became deeply shaken, and I tried to encourage her. I never imagined she would leave us so soon.”
Mamunur Rashid said, “Sharmili was an immensely talented artiste. She succeeded across all three mediums — stage, television, and film. At one point, she became so natural in motherly roles that audiences truly saw her as a mother figure. Later, she was diagnosed with cancer, and eventually she passed away. An artiste lives on through their work, and her work will continue to keep her alive. She has left behind many remarkable performances.”
Abul Hayat shared, “Sharmili was a highly talented artiste. She grew up in a cultural and artistic family environment. We worked together for many years. Very few people possess such kindness. Her behaviour was always gracious, and she treated everyone with respect. In return, she was respected by all. Most importantly, Sharmili Ahmed was a gifted and humble artiste. I will never forget acting alongside her.”
Sharmili Ahmed passed away on July 8, 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy of unforgettable performances that continue to be cherished.
