Singers making their way to the screen
Singers stepping into acting roles in television dramas and films is not a new phenomenon. Over the years, many singers have explored acting at different points in their careers. Some have earned praise for their performances, while others have continued to balance both music and acting regularly. Here is a look at a few such artistes.
Legendary subcontinental vocalist Runa Laila once appeared in the film “Shilpi”, directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam. She starred opposite Alamgir, and the film's narrative largely revolved around her character. The demands of the story drove her involvement in the project.
Singer Hridoy Khan took on an acting role in the drama “Rupkotha”, directed by Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Raz, where he starred opposite Nusrat Imrose Tisha. He also appeared alongside Tarin in the Eid telefilm “Shoron”, directed by Tanmoy Tansen.
Tahsan, widely known for his music, has also built a strong presence in both television and cinema and OTT. He starred opposite Indian actress Srabanti Chatterjee in the film “Jodi Ekdin”, also directed by Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Raz.
Partha Barua has appeared in several dramas and films, including productions in the Chattogram regional dialect. He featured in the acclaimed film “Aynabaji”, web series "Taqdeer", and the film “Made in Chittagong”.
Pritom Hasan has also received appreciation for his acting alongside his musical career. He gained attention for his performances in web content such as “Kacher Manush Dure Thuiya” and “Cactus”, “Tumi Ami Shudhu”, both directed by Shihab Shaheen. His role in the web film “Ghumpori” was also well-received. He additionally performed in the song “Lage Ura Dhura” from the film “Toofan”.
Singer and composer Xefer Rahman has ventured into acting as well. She appeared in Shihab Shaheen’s “Myself Allen Swapan 2” and “Tumi Ami Shudhu”. Her acting debut came in Mostofa Sarwar Farooki’s web film “Last Defender of Monogamy”, where she starred opposite Chanchal Chowdhury.
Band musician Shafin Ahmed acted in the six-episode drama series “Rhythm of Life”.
Singer Rashed Uddin Ahmed Topu appeared in “Third Person Singular Number”, directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki. Singer Balam acted in “Neelchakro”, directed by Mithu Khan, where he was seen portraying a villain.
Singer Porshi has also explored acting, appearing in Shamim Ahmed Roni’s film “Mental”. She is now occasionally seen in television dramas.
In the popular series “Eta Amaderi Golpo”, singers Arfin Rumey and Dola Rahman appeared as themselves in the extended 92-minute finale (episode 52).
The transition from music to acting is hardly unusual. Many vocalists have made guest appearances in dramas and films over the years, including Azam Khan, Bappa Mazumder, Samina Chowdhury, Fahmida Nabi, Kona, Salma, Mila, and others. Most of them have appeared as guest artistes, adding a different dimension to their creative journeys.
