Anne Hathaway has revealed that work is underway on a potential third installment of the beloved “Princess Diaries” franchise, though the project has yet to receive official approval.

In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actress said the team is actively developing the film, with the intention of making it her next project after completing a busy slate that includes “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and other upcoming roles.

“We’re constantly working on it,” Hathaway said, adding that scheduling conflicts previously made it difficult to focus on multiple projects at once.

However, she clarified that “Princess Diaries 3” has not yet been greenlit, emphasising that expectations for the sequel are high. “If we do it, we have to get it absolutely right,” she said.

Her co-star Meryl Streep echoed the sentiment, noting that the film depends on finding the right script.

The original “The Princess Diaries”, directed by Garry Marshall and based on Meg Cabot’s novel, was released in 2001 and followed Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers she is the heir to the fictional kingdom of Genovia. The film was a commercial success, leading to a sequel in 2004, which saw Hathaway reunite with Julie Andrews.

Disney, the studio behind the franchise, has yet to comment on the development.
