Bangladeshi documentary ‘Payer Chhaap’ to be screened in China
The Bangladeshi documentary “Payer Chhaap” is set to be screened at several universities and schools in China, extending the international reach of a film that has already drawn attention for its portrayal of resilience and determination.
Produced by Channel i Managing Director Faridur Reza Sagar and directed by journalist Mustafa Mollick, the 24-minute documentary chronicles the life of Ayesha Akter from Gaibandha, who was born without both hands and overcame numerous challenges to pursue her education.
Since its broadcast on Channel i on May 17, the documentary has generated significant interest and has also received clearance from the Bangladesh Film Certification Board.
As part of its international outreach, Chinese photographer, architect, and urban planner Liu Jie has translated the documentary into Chinese. He reportedly compared Ayesha’s journey to that of renowned Chinese disability rights advocate Zhang Haidi.
According to Liu Jie, screenings have been scheduled next month at South China Normal University and South China Agricultural University, alongside three high schools in China.
The documentary follows Ayesha’s educational journey, from overcoming barriers in childhood to completing her master’s degree with a first-class result in 2025. She currently teaches underprivileged children in her village free of charge while preparing for employment opportunities.
Following the documentary’s broadcast, Channel i announced financial support for Ayesha. Faridur Reza Sagar said she would receive a monthly allowance of Tk 10,000 until securing permanent employment.
“Ayesha has proven that conquering life does not require hands, but an indomitable will,” director Mostafa Mollik said.
The documentary was produced with support from Eastern Insurance and MalishaEdu.
