National Award-winning actor Fazlur Rahman Babu believes his upcoming film “Mastul” will resonate deeply with audiences through its emotionally driven story and unconventional subject matter.

Directed by Mohammad Nuruzzaman, the film is set for release later this month. Babu, who has won six National Film Awards over his career, described “Mastul” as an independent film centred on the lives of people whose livelihoods depend on supplying fuel to ships along Bangladesh’s waterways.

“It’s a deeply human story,” Babu said. “The film follows a community that spends most of its life on the water, moving from vessel to vessel to earn a living. It’s a different kind of story, and that’s what makes it special.”

According to the veteran actor, “Mastul” offers an alternative to mainstream commercial cinema and is expected to leave a lasting impression on viewers.

“Not every film has to follow the same formula. There should also be films with different themes and perspectives. I believe ‘Mastul’ will make audiences think, touch their hearts and earn their appreciation,” he said.

Babu said portraying a man whose life revolves around Bangladesh’s river routes was a rewarding experience.

“Acting has always been my greatest passion. I enjoyed playing this character because I am naturally drawn to stories like this. It reflects the struggles of people who spend most of their lives working on the water, and I found that journey deeply engaging,” he said.

Production on “Mastul” began several years ago before facing delays. Prior to its domestic release, the film was screened at the Moscow International Film Festival, where it received positive responses.

“I had the opportunity to attend the festival with the film. We received a warm welcome and encouraging feedback from audiences there. It was a memorable experience for me as an actor,” Babu recalled.

The actor has been away from regular acting commitments while recovering from major surgery but said he plans to return to work soon. He recently recorded a promotional song for “Mastul” and is focusing on regaining his health before taking on new projects.

“I’ve undergone a major operation, so I’m taking my time. By the grace of God, I’m recovering well and hope to return to acting soon,” he said.

Away from films, Babu is closely following the FIFA World Cup and revealed that he has supported Brazil since childhood, while his wife backs Argentina.

“Winning and losing are part of sport. What’s important is enjoying the game. I’ve supported Brazil since I was young, and the excitement of watching the World Cup has stayed with me ever since,” he said.
