Peter Jackson has confirmed that he will direct the long-awaited sequel to “The Adventures of Tintin”, marking his return to directing a narrative feature film for the first time since 2014.

The announcement came during a Q&A session at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, where Jackson is also set to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.

According to Jackson, the sequel moves forward as part of a long-standing agreement with filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who directed the first film released in 2011.

The upcoming film is expected to adapt Hergé’s classic Tintin stories “The Seven Crystal Balls” and “Prisoners of the Sun”.

Jackson also confirmed that the project will use advanced motion-capture technology developed by Weta FX, the visual effects company behind several of his earlier productions.

While casting agreements are yet to be finalised, actor Andy Serkis has reportedly expressed interest in returning as Captain Haddock, while Jamie Bell is expected to reprise his role as Tintin.

The sequel remained in development for more than a decade while Jackson focused on projects including “The Hobbit” trilogy, “They Shall Not Grow Old”, and “The Beatles: Get Back”.

Jackson said multiple script ideas had been explored over the years before the project finally found a clear direction.

Production is expected to begin following his ongoing work as producer on “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”.
