Fatal accident at a Ctg. railway crossing
UNMANNED level crossing at Chandgaon industrial belt in the port city has caused yet another ghastly mishap on Tuesday morning. A train rammed a bus stuck at the crossing point killing four garment workers and injuring 10 others.
How a busy port city having a concentration of industries can have an unmanned railway crossing is beyond comprehension! More so, when you look at the record of accidents -- 47 crashes at level crossings in the last three years under the east zone of Bangladesh Railway. If such an important part of the railway arterial network has level crossing bereft of regulation safety standards then surely the policymakers have to take the blame for the deaths.
As if the railway's own poor risk perception has permeated the bus operator; for, according to a passenger, the driver had put on headphones so that he could not hear the rumbling of an oncoming train. What is most surprising and condemnable is that the Bahir Signal at Chandgaon has remained unmanned for the last three to four years. And, as a cruel joke, you see a signboard near the level crossing reading that commuters can cross it on their own responsibility.
What should have been the responsibility of the railway authorities to provide security to the commuter is being passed on to the commuting public. Such a passing of buck is in a class of its own, and shame on the railway administration!
