In Basanta bloom
With Pahela Falgun, the much-awaited Basanta or spring arrives in a display of colours. Dhaka is set to celebrate the day with flowers, poems and songs as the seasonal cycle is in transition from a bone-chilling, gloomy winter to the festivity of colours and love.
Basanta Boron Utshab -- a string of programmes and events to mark the occasion -- will be held throughout the day all over the city. Dhaka University, like previous years, will be the centre of these cultural events. There will be live music performances and concerts, poetry recitations, dance programmes and rallies at the Bakultala of Dhaka University's Institute of Fine Arts. The university's TSC is another place where students will gather to receive the day in bright colours and vibrant music.
In the afternoon Rabindra Shorobor and Bahadur Shah Park will come alive with carnivals and musical soirees. The Ekushey Boi Mela, which has gathered momentum, will be another popular destination for people to spend the day. Folk music and performances by indigenous people will also be featured in the programmes.
The most exciting part of the day will be a dazzling display of colourful dresses on the streets. Flowers and floral wreaths will be used as ornaments by women.
Pahela Falgun is an integral part of our culture. With men wearing Punjabi and women sari and flowers -- all gathering in a carnival of music and colour and a feast of local cuisine -- this day brings out the essence of our Bengali identity.
