A nine-month-old boy has died with measles‑like symptoms at the isolation ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) over the last 24 hours till 9:00am today, raising the total number of child deaths there to 27 since March 17.
Hospital focal person Dr Md Golam Mawla, an associate professor, said the boy, from Trishal, died of post‑measles pneumonia and respiratory failure despite receiving treatment. He was admitted on May 2.
In the last 24 hours, 40 more children were admitted to the hospital, bringing the total number of patients currently undergoing treatment in the isolation ward to 94. Due to a shortage of beds, many patients are being treated on the floor and in corridors.
Since March 17, the hospital has admitted 1,145 children with measles‑like symptoms. Of them, 1,024 have recovered and been discharged. In the past 24 hours alone, 19 children were discharged after recovery.
