Let Hatirjheel be not ruined

Let Hatirjheel be not ruined

Fast losing shine of its sheen

WHAT was supposed to be a beautification-cum-communication infrastructure is unfortunately taking a lackadaisical turn. The murky waste water released from different adjoining areas in to the Hatirjheel canals is not only polluting its environ, but also belching a stench. The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology experts have expressed their concern at this, and urged early intervention to check pollution.
Adding to the mess is the haywire traffic in the area. CNG-run scooters, private cars and rickshaws frequently crisscross from wrong directions as there is no one to monitor the traffic.
According to experts following measures may be considered to rid Hatirjheel of pollution: pumping out water near Rampura Bridge; restricting free-flow of sewerage water from Kalabagan , Panthpath and Moghbazar areas from enetring Hatirjheel and diverting it elsewhere. Within the Hatirjheel there should be a water treatment plant.Hatirjheel needs a well-planned and effective traffic system as well. Careless dumping of garbage must be stopped on pain of punishment.
Finally, we must shun the attitude of resting on the laurels of a prestige project once installed and then washing our hands of maintenance responsibilities.
Maintenance is vital for such a modern project.
