Happy Birthday!
For the last 18 years the Star has been a source of inspiration and enlightenment in my life.  The anniversary issue once again proves that the Star is more than just a weekend magazine—it deeply cares about important socio-economic issues. The funny but poignant columns of Aasha Mehreen Amin, Syed Badrul Ahsan, the philosophical essays of Andrew Eagle, the sharp and witty articles of Sharbari Ahmed and the well researched features on a wide range of topics by the staff writers entertain as well as educate us on issues that are important to all of us. I want to thank the leadership of the Star  for being a beacon of hope in the darkness that has engulfed our country.

Imagine
Imagine all the ideas of the cover story are implemented. How will the country look like then? The future of our country is in our hands. Let us build it together.

Young Politicians
We hope the young politicians will set a positive trend of crossing the aisle to build a consensus about national goals and objectives. Talk is cheap, we want them to act.

The Thirsty City
The cover story [May 30]  depicts  the hard reality of millions of people who live in this city. There is water all around us—in rivers, lakes and ponds—but not a drop to drink! DWASA has failed to supply safe drinking water to us. In the midst of the worsening water crisis, Ataul Karim's innovative idea to produce drinking water through affordable technology is inspiring.

Batty and Brilliant
Cartoon speaks a thousand words in a little frame and unveils bare
truth about the society—some-times in a funny way. I am glad to learn that many talented young cartoonists are finding a platform to express their views. Thanks to the Star for such a fun cover story.

With Needle and Thread
I was glad to read the cover story on Nakshi Kantha (May 16) which has been a part of our tradition for a long time. The women entrepreneurs mentioned in the story have proved that they are determined to succeed and contribute to the development of the society. Both the public and private sectors should do everything to help them.

The Dawn of the New
Bangladeshi musicians despite all the violence and political turmoil have been presenting us with new sounds and tunes. They are extremely talented and innovative. I loved reading about my most favourite musicians and bands—Arnob, Bahok, Meghdol, Chirkut, Joler Gaan and others. Also, I enjoyed the article titled “18 Days that Shook Bangladesh.” It is well–written and informative.

Be Human
Every conscious citizen is worried about the recent crime spree namely abduction and killing. However, in today's newspaper I read something that has shaken my faith in humanity. The news said that a newborn baby was put in a bag and then thrown on the middle of the road. A vehicle ran over the bag leaving the baby dead. Whoever did it is not a human in my eyes. I guess this would not have happened if people were given Islamic teachings. Islam puts the highest emphasis on human life. The Quran says, “Whoever kills a human being (soul), unless it is for murder or corruption on Earth, it is as though he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved the life of all mankind.” (Al-Quran: Chapter 5, Verse 31) May Allah guide us all to the right path.

A Quality Man
Heartiest thanks to the Star for the cover story titled “A Man of Quality” (published on 9 May). As a business student, I am highly inspired by Subir Chowdhury who is one of the respected management leaders of the 21st century. Chowdhury never did anything for money and fame. His passion lies in gaining knowledge and then applying that knowledge to change the lives of others.  I expect to see more stories like this.

Frankenstein
The ruling party has created many monsters who act like they are above the law.   The government must act fast to take actions against them. The country is hurting.

The Modi Effect
As a citizen I feel morally compelled to congratulate Mufazzel Karim for writing such a strong letter on the reactions of our political leaders on the Modi victory. I also want to thank the writer of  “The Modi Effect”, published on May 23.

Remembrance
I like the Remembrance section very much. If you could include a few significant comments of the concerned persons then it would add more value.
