Democratic Budget Movement protests economic, social inequality
The Democratic Budget Movement (DBM) organised a human chain in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue this afternoon (Sunday) to protest growing economic and social inequality in Bangladesh and globally.
The event aimed to draw policymakers’ attention to the need for fair and inclusive economic policies.
The protest was part of regional activities around the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, held from January 19 to 23. Civil society groups worldwide have been highlighting concerns about inequality and other social issues during the forum.
The event in Dhaka was organised jointly by DBM, SAAPE, and the Fighting Inequality Alliance. Civil society representatives, researchers, development professionals, youth activists, and concerned citizens took part.
Participants highlighted the widening gap between the rich and the poor, unequal distribution of resources, and the lack of social justice. They called for justice-based budgeting, stronger social protection systems, and national and global measures to reduce inequality.
DBM General Secretary Monower Mostafa said the organisation would continue raising public awareness and advocating for a fair and democratic budget system.
Among others, the speakers at the event included Zakia Shishir, Benzir Ahmed, Nahidul Islam Nayan, Anisuzzaman, Farzana Akter Moni, and Parvin Akter.
The programme was moderated by Sekendar Ali Mina, executive director of SRS, and joint general secretary of the Democratic Budget Movement.
