260-bigha water bodies returned to owners
An initiative by army has brought hope for 350 landless families at Soydabad village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila.
At a simple function yesterday, water bodies spread out 260 bighas, taken away from an NGO, were handed to the families who earlier owned the lands.
The Jamuna Bridge authorities had acquired the lands during construction of the bridge. The lands turned into water bodies due to dredging. The actual landowners had been demanding return of water bodies.
But, the Jamuna Bridge authorities leased those to an NGO for fish cultivation in 2006.
Army, with the help of local administration, formed the Soydabad Fish Cultivators' Association with the 350 landowners.
Brig. Gen. Nasimul Gani released fries in a pond yesterday. Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Khalil were present.
