Vow to resist trafficking
Over two thousand people of bordering Kushkhali union in Sadar upazila yesterday vowed to resist women and children trafficking from the country through the border areas.
Expressing their all out support to the law enforcers to combat the heinous crime, the bordering people called upon the law enforcement agencies to develop effective methods to combat human trafficking and bring cross border traffickers to book.
Kushkhali union SBS Club, an organisation of local youths, arranged the discussion on “Role of bordering people to combat women and children trafficking” on the premises of Shikri High School to create awareness among the bordering people.
“Trafficking involves gross violation of human rights, the victim suffers from physical and mental abuse. On a large scale trafficking subverts development efforts and raises social as well as health expenditure," said Satkhira Superintendent of Police (SP) Mirza Abdullahel Baki in his address as the chief guest.
He identified poverty and ignorance as two major reasons behind trafficking in people.
Emphasising the need for developing strategies and taking coordinated measures with the bordering villagers of all walks of life to fight the menace, he said stern action would be taken against the traffickers.
Bordering villagers as well as media can play a vital role to combat the crime as the traffickers chose land borders to traffic women and children.
Satkhira has become vulnerable for trafficking as it has porous border with India, other speakers said, adding that existing laws to combat the crime are not always properly enforced.
