Death toll rises to 9 in Sylhet

Death toll in 'mysterious' disease at Lathigram and Deogram villages in Gowainghat upazila rose to nine in four days as two more patients died yesterday. The two are Kabir Ahmed, 18, who died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and Alkas, 10, who died on way to the hospital from Gowainghat Upazila Health Complex. Meanwhile, a high level medical team arrived from the capital at the village, said Sylhet civil surgeon (CS) Dr A Z Mahbub Ahmed. They visited patients at the hospitals. Earlier, a 5-member team led by Dr MA Malek, senior scientific officer of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Sylhet, reached the village on Monday. They also visited the patients' houses and collected samples of vegetable and tube-well water consumed by inmates of the houses. "We now suspect the deaths from viral attack", civil surgeon said. Another patient was shifted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition yesterday morning. Six others are undergoing treatment there and seven more are undergoing treatment at Gowainghat Upazila Health Complex, official sources said.
