5,000 to miss test as criteria changed after form submission
At least 5,000 student seeking admission in first year honours courses under 2007-08 academic session in Rajshahi University will not be able to sit in admission test starting tomorrow due to the authorities' irresponsible decision.
The RU authorities on September 23 published advertisements in national and local dailies, specifying the academic qualification for admission seekers from science, arts and commerce groups.
As per the advertisement, applicants with science background must have 7.5 points (including the 4th subject) in SSC and HSC examinations while the Arts and Commerce students must have 6.5 points with the 4th subject.
But on September 25, the RU authorities issued a fresh advertisement for science group students mentioning that if a science group student wants to change his or her group he or she must have the same qualification that is required for admission into science group subjects.
Many science group students had already submitted their admission test form to the departments concerned as per the pervious rules and took admit cards as several departments received the science group students' admission form during the two days, sources said.
A source of social work department said more than 2,000 admit cards had already been distributed among the admission seekers who submitted admission forms maintaining the previous rules.
Later the department authorities followed new rules for science group students and recently they identified some admission forms that do not qualify for sitting admission tests as per the new rules.
Department sources said those science group students will not be able to sit in admission test start on November 12 although they had got admit cards according to previous rules.
The rate of rejected admission forms was high in social science, arts, business administration and law faculties, RU sources said.
Life and Earth faculty departments were also received the previous rules maintain admission forms and admit cards were distributed among the admission seekers, sources said.
Ainul Islam, a science group student who applied for social work department, blamed the university authorities' irresponsibility for issuing new rules late.
When contacted, Chairman of Social Work Department Fakrul Islam said the problem was created as the university authorities' decision regarding the admission test criteria was conveyed late.
He said they admit cards were distributed to students who submitted admission forms maintaining the previous rules.
Chairmen of several departments said they returned the money taken for admission forms from the admission seekers who were disqualified for admission test as per the new rule.
Many admission seekers, however, denied the chairmen's claim.
Meanwhile, at least 2,000 admission forms submitted to different departments were rejected due to non-submission of necessary papers, giving wrong information and not giving fingerprint.
