Jam at Paturia ghat: 10 hurt in clash
At least 10 people were injured, two of them critically, in a clash over ferrying of vehicles between bus and truck labourers at Paturia ferry terminal yesterday, police sources said.
Two critically injured drivers Azizur Rahman and Dulu both hailing from Jhenidah were shifted to Uthuly Health Complex, they said.
Agitated labourers damaged glasses of seven buses and five trucks during the clash.
When contacted, Paturia outpost In-charge Sub Inspector (SI) Mazhar said the clash erupted at about 11: 15 am when truck labourers attacked bus labourers on the ferry while loading of buses was going on.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (Biwta) manager Biddut Kumar Saha said an unbearable traffic jam was created on both sides of Paturia and Daulatdia ferry ghats due to delay in ferry movement caused as one out of two pontoons remained inoperative at Daulatdia terminal for the last seven days.
About 100 buses and 250 trucks were stranded at Daulatdia while 250 trucks stranded at Paturia ferry terminal at about 1:30 pm, he said.
