School of Debate inauguratedThe two-month Star Campus-Drishty School of Debate was inaugurated at Lions Foundation auditorium in the port city on Saturday. Educationist and cultural personality Prof Hasina Zakaria inaugurated the School of Debate organised by Drishty, an educational and cultural organisation. Syed Ahsanul Haq, a teacher of marketing department of Chittagong University, was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony while Sunman Properties DGM Salim Bin Saleh, Chittagong International School Principal Fazle Alam and Master Mind International School Principal Prof Golam Abu Mohammad were the special guests. Drishty Debate Secretary Afsana Toma, Joint Debate Secretary Reza Chowdhury and Recitation Secretary Urmi Achrya spoke at the function with Drishty President Masud Bakul in the chair. A total of 77 students from 10 English medium schools of the city are participating in the sixth batch of the School of Debate, said the organisers. Construction of Muktamancha begins
Construction work of Muktamancha and Rehearsal Room of Chittagong Shilpakala Academy in the port city began on Saturday. Chattagram Sangskritik Unnayan Samannaya Karjakari Parshad initiated the construction to fulfill the long-felt demand of Chittagong people. Lion Rupam Kishore Barua, director (finance) of Confidence Cement, and Abul Momen, resident editor of the Prothom Alo in Chittagong, inaugurated the construction work. Sangskritik Unnayan Parishad Convener Deputy Commissioner Farid Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury of Chittagong presided over the inaugural ceremony. The people of Chittagong viewed the largest planet Jupiter and its three satellites through telescope in the port city on Saturday. Chittagong Sky Watchers Club set up the telescope, the largest one in the country, in front of CJKS Gymnasium on the MA Aziz Stadium premises as part of programme chalked out jointly by Sky Watchers Club and National Science and Technology Museum. The programme marked the International Astronomy Year 2009 declared by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). A large number of enthusiastic people irrespective of age and sex watched the Jupiter and its three satellites - Calisto, Ganymede and Ayeo, from 6:30pm to 10:00pm in the evening. Industries Minister Dilip Barua called for spreading the ideology of Maulana Mohammad Maniruzzaman Islamabadi among the new generation to help establish an exploitation-free society. He was addressing as the chief guest a discussion marking the 59th death anniversary of Maniruzzaman Islamabadi here on Saturday. Barua said revolutionary spirit and anti-British movement of this non-communal Maulana would always encourage the peace-loving people to establish an oppression and exploitation-free society. 'Protect Bayezid turtles'
Environmentalists staged a sit-in on the Bayezid Bostami Mazar premise on Sunday demanding cancellation of permission to construct a market building on the mazar premises and protection of "Bayezid Kachhim", a rare species of turtle living in the pond there. Several environmental organisations organised the sit-in. The speakers at the sit-in said construction of a market building would obstruct the pond from getting sunlight for most of the daytime. It would cause the turtles to loose breeding capacity and push the species to extinction. Prof Mohammad Idris Ali, chief adviser to environmental organisation People's Voice was the principal speaker at the rally presided over by Jano Udyog Coordinator Sharif Chouhan. Chittagong Environmental Journalists Forum General Secretary Aliur Rahman, Masuda Bilkis, K Parvez, Kaiser Alam, Faruk Ahmed Rubel and Safayet Uddin also spoke at the sit-in. CSCR (Pvt) Ltd, a diagnostic centre turned hospital, opened a Special Care Neonatal Unit with a view to providing better treatment to newborns in the port city. Noted child specialist National Professor Dr MR Khan inaugurated the unit as the chief guest at Centre for Special Care and Research (CSCR) as the chief guest on Friday. Prof MR Khan in his speech called on the paediatricians to render service with more devotion and patriotic approach so that no child dies without treatment. He called upon the doctors to give medical treatment to the poor children, if possible free of cost, and make the best use of talents and qualifications to serve the country. Prof Dr Fazlul Karim, Prof Dr Mahboob Kamal, Prof Dr MA Taher Khan and Prof Shamsunnahan Ara and Jasim Uddin Chowdhury were the special guests at the inaugural ceremony presided over by CSCR Chairman Prof Dr M Manzurul Islam.
