Case Against RU Teachers

Hearing of PWs concludes

Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal yesterday completed hearing all the 18 prosecution witnesses in the case against six Rajshahi University teachers for violating emergency power rules. Statement of investigation officer (IO) of the case sub inspector Nasir Uddin Mondol was also recorded and he was cross-examined by defence lawyers. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and judge of the court Ruhul Amin fixed November 13 for the accused to plead their innocence. The six teachers -- former RU vice chancellor Dr M Saidur Rahman Khan, Syndicate member Dr M Abdus Sobhan, Prof. Moloy Bhoumik, Prof. Dulal Chandra Biswas, Prof. Sayed Selim Reza Newton and Prof. Abdullah Al Mamun--were on the dock during the hearing. The teachers were charged for violating EPR through holding protest procession, observing strike and instigating campus violence on August 21 and 22. Former officer-in-charge of Motihar police station Khondoker Ferdous Alam lodged the case against three teachers on August 26. Later, the IO pressed charges against six teachers on September 1. The court framed charges on September 17. DGFI Vehicle torching case The same court also heard three prosecution witnesses in another EPR violation case against 14 persons including two RU teachers for allegedly torching a DGFI vehicle on August 22. The PWs are assistant sub-inspector Towhidul, sub-inspector Abul Kashem and Sayeed Golam Mohiuddin, deputy manager of Grameen Phone. The court will hear the last PW out of 21 in the case today. Shawkat Ali, DGFI assistant director and plaintiff of the case, alleged that a group of unruly students and people assaulted him while he was on duty on the campus on August 22. He also stated that the two accused teachers ordered students over mobile phones to torch his government vehicle. Accused teachers -- Dr Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan Sajal and Dr Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu of geology and mining department--were produced before the court. Other accused persons -- deputy chief information officer Sadikul Islam of RU Public Relations Office and driver Ataur Rahman of former RU vice chancellor Faisul Islam Faruki --were also in the court. The absconding accused are -- RU Chhatra League secretary Ayenuddin, Dipayan Sarkar, Mizanur Rahman Mithu, Sardar Ayaz, SM Fakrul Islam Raihan, Abu Sayem, Shamim Ahmed, Kazi A Latif, Shakhawat Hossain, Aziz Bin Kamal. The case was lodged on August 23, accusing two teachers and four students. Later, on September 1, the investigation officer sub inspector Mukhtar Hossain pressed charges against 14 people.
