Viral encephalitis suspect dies in Fenchuganj
A 5-year-old girl from Fenchuganj upazila died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from suspected viral encephalitis Monday night.
Viral encephalitis claimed 22 lives in remote Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas so far. Sharmin, daughter of Akkas Ali of Fenchuganj upazila along with others was under treatment at the hospital.
Fourteen children and women brought from Companiganj upazila were admitted to the hospital Monday night and yesterday. They were being treated for viral encephalitis, doctors said.
With them, 46 are now under treatment at the hospital, Sylhet Civil Surgeon Dr. AZ Mahbub Ahmed told the Daily Star yesterday evening.
The five-men team headed by Dr. Abdul Malek, Senior Scientific Officer of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease control and Research (IEDCR), went to the affected villages in Companiganj yesterday also. The samples will be sent abroad for clinical tests, an official said.
