'Save rivers, canals from grabbers'
Speakers at a citizens' meeting yesterday urged the government to save the rivers and canals in northern districts from grabbers.
At a meeting held at Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries auditorium, they stressed the need for following ecological and environment-friendly processes in river management.
Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa), Rajshahi unit organised the meeting on 'Uttar Banger Nod-Nodir Durobastha O Koronio'.
Reiterating Bapa's commitment to creating awareness among the mass people, including the civil society, for protecting the rivers and canals, they said despite some temporary benefits received from small and large dams and bridges in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, their long-term adverse effects are now crystal-clear.
Bapa Joint Secretary Sharif Zamil presented the opening speech while Bapa General Secretary Dr Abdul Matin was present as the main speaker at the meeting chaired by senior journalist Proshanto Saha.
