Jamaat leader held for cheating on job promise

Sadullapur upazila Jamaat-e-Islami leader and managing director of Madina Enterprises Maulana Abdur Rashid was sent to jail yesterday on charge of realising money from jobless youths in the name of 'security deposit' on promises of employment. Abdur Rashid faces several cases filed with police in Sonatola upazila in Bogra, Rangpur Sadar and Sadullapur upazila, police said. Police sought five days' remand but the court granted three days' remand, officer-in-charge of Sadullapur police station said. Penniless Abdur Rashid turned a millionaire by taking money from jobless youths. His businesses now include poultry and fish farms and dealership of imported motorcycles, police claimed. According to statements of some deprived youths, Abdur Rashid collected over Tk three crore as security money from about 300 jobless youths on false assurance of employment in posts of manager and salesman in his firm. He collected Tk 50,000 to Tk 3 lakh from the youths, they alleged. Hailing from Enayetpur village in Sadullapur ipazila in Gaibandha district, Abdur Rashid joined Sadullapur upazila unit of Islami Chattra Shibir. He then joined Jamaat and contested for the port of chairman of Sadullapur Upazila Parishad but lost. Police said those who filed cases against him include Hasan Md. Feroz of Ashmatpur village in Sadullapur, Shahidul Islam of Sonatola village in Bogra and Shah Md. Shameem Akhter of Dhap in Rangpur district. The cases were filed in their respective police stations. Acting on a tip-off, Sadullapur police raided his house on Wednesday and arrested him. When contacted, district leaders of Jamaat denied Abdur Rashid's involvement with the party. They however said that Abdur Rashid was a Shibir leader in Sadullapur.
