Road links, cell phone restored in Barisal region
Life is gradually returning to normalcy in urban areas in Barisal but millions in rural areas and shorelands are still battling for survival, three days after hurricane Sidr battered the southern districts.
Reports received from affected areas in Barisal division said that relief operation by administration started with the help of local governments and joint forces.
Navy ships, Army helicopters were busy carrying relief goods to remote areas.
Drinking water, dry food, fuel, treatment of injured persons, medicines, cloths, and house building materials are urgently needed in affected areas.
Mobile phone networks have been restored in most of the areas, but land phone connections and electricity supply in many areas of Barisal city and other towns are yet to be normal as lines torn by Sidr were not repaired.
Abdul Huq, Barisal district relief and rehabilitation officer, said Tk 82.6 lakh, 389 metric tons of rice, 1030 pieces of blankets and 730 tents were received and send to affected areas in 10 upazilas in the district.
Offices, courts, kitchen markets and financial institutions were seen crowded in Barisal city.
Water transportation resumed and road communications between most of the district and upazila headquarters were restored after fallen trees were removed from roads and highways.
Officials said the death toll reached 1939 and was increasing with passage of time with recovery more bodies of missing people.
The toll included 114 deaths in Barisal, 699 in Patuakhali, 910 in Barguna, 146 in Pirojpur, 38 in Jhalakati, and 32 in Bhola.
Several thousand people including fishermen are still missing, sources said.
