227 fertiliser bags seized: 4 arrested

Police seized 227 sacks of fertiliser and arrested four people in Kushtia and Tangail yesterday and Sunday night. Our Kushtia correspondent said, police in a raid conducted in Chourasta area in the town, arrested three people and seized 192 sacks of fertiliser. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police searched a truck standing on a filing station with 180 sacks of fertiliser in the morning. Police arrested the truck driver Johny Shiekh and his helper Nayan. On interrogation, the truck driver admitted to his involvement in carrying fertiliser from Jhenidah to Bakdub in Pabna. One Shajahan was supposed to receive the fertilizer there, the driver said. But, police could not find out the actual owner of the fertiliser. The two were being interrogated at Sadar police station. In another raid conducted in Bheramara at about 10:am, police recovered 12 sacks of fertiliser from a bus on Kushtia-Bheramara road. On search, police recovered fertiliser and arrested one person named Abir Hasan, said Bheramara police station officer-in-charge (OC). Our Tangail Correspondent said one person was arrested with 35 sacks of fertiliser from Nalin Bazaar ghat in Bhuapur upazila Sunday night. The arrestee is Mohammad Zahangir, 35, son of Bellal Hossain of Ramail village in Bhuapur upazila. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Bhuapur police arrested Zahangir with the fertiliser from Nalin Bazaar while he was loading fertiliser sacks in a boat on the Jamuna, police said.
