2 RU teachers among 4 plead innocence
Four accused persons including two Rajshahi University teachers in the case for torching a DGFI vehicle yesterday pleaded their innocence and claimed that they were not involved with the violence.
The Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M Ruhul Amin recorded their pleadings and fixed November 21 for hearing witnesses vindicating innocence of the accused and argument between state and defense lawyers.
Pleading innocence, RU teachers Dr Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan Sajal and Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu told the court that they had no relations with any violation of the emergency power rules and torching of the DGFI vehicle.
They said they never talked to anyone over mobile phone to instigate the campus violence.
They claimed they were implicated in the case out of a conspiracy by a vested quarter of the university to damage their reputation.
RU Deputy Chief Information Officer M Sadekul Islam and Ataur Rahman, a driver of former RU vice chancellor Faisul Islam Faruki, also pleaded their innocence.
DGFI Assistant Director Shawkat Ali lodged the case on August 23 accusing two teachers and four students for torching his vehicle and assaulting him during the campus violence on August 22. Later on September 1, the investigation officer, sub inspector Mukhtar Hossain pressed charges against 14 people.
