Design of the swimming pool at Laldighi Park.

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) will construct a swimming pool at Laldighi Park dividing the existing pond with a concrete dam. Of the 370-foot length and 137-foot width of the Laldighi pond, 137-foot length and 70-foot width will be used for the swimming pool with modern facilities for all classes of people in the port city, sources in CCC said. The city corporation will spend Tk 2 crore for the swimming pool, a long-standing demand of the city dwellers, from its own fund and tender for entrusting company with the work has already been floated, they said. “We hope to start the work from second week of March and complete it within three months,” said CCC Executive Engineer (Division-2) Kamrul Islam. He said the international standard three to 12 feet depth pool will be suitable for people of all ages who do not know how to swim only due to lack of facility. Other features of the pool included modern dressing room, water filtering system and walkways around the pool. The pool will remain open to all with a minimum cost to avert unexpected rush and there will be separate arrangement for the women, he said. “The existing pond and park will remain intact and we have plan to set up two giant screens with light and sound there to acquaint people with the history and culture of the country through multimedia presentation on different occasions,” he said. The swimming pool will play great role in helping the people to know how to swim that is very important for people of all ages, he said. Consultancy firm Fialka of the port city has developed the design and plan for the swimming pool. Fialka Architect Ashiq Imran said the design has been developed in a portion of the existing pond and it will be great work after implementation since the city dwellers are lacking such a park, swimming pool and pond at one space. Children of the new generation who grow up in concrete jungle are not familiar with ponds and swimming Ashiq said, adding that most of the water bodies in the city have already been filled up due to rapid expansion of the city threatening the ecological balance to a great extent. Anurup Titu, a resident of Anayet Bazar area, said there are swimming pools in luxurious hotels in the port city which general people cannot afford. “Water of most of the existing ponds is dirty and not suitable for swimming. If the city corporation authorities can maintain the pool properly, it will be a great work,” Titu said.
