$27m Bepza project for EPZs
Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (Bepza) with the financial assistance of World Bank (WB) would implement a 27 million US dollar poverty alleviation project at the Export Processing Zones (EPZs). Bepza Executive Chairman Brigadier General Jamil Ahmed Khan said this when a WB delegation led by Bangladesh Country Director Miss Ellen Goldstein visited Chittagong EPZ on Monday. Under the project titled "Northern Areas Reduction of Poverty Initiative (NARI)", training facilities and employment opportunity would be created for women of different poverty and famine -stricken areas of the country's northern region, said Brigadier Khan. For women to participate in training programme under the project, accommodation facilities would be developed at Dhaka , Karnaphuli and Ishwardi EPZs, he told a view exchange meeting at CEPZ Zone Services Complex conference room. IDA of WB would provide 20 million US dollar while the rest would be financed by Bepza for the project to be completed in four years since January, 2011, he said. The WB delegation visited Messers Pacific Jeans Limited and Messers Mamia OP factories in CEPZ and expressed satisfaction over management system, owners-employees relationship and working atmosphere in EPZ. Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr Afsarul Ameen said the government has taken initiatives to remove illiteracy from the country by 2014. Emphasising primary and mass education, the government has already started process of disseminating light of education to remote areas, said the minister here on Friday. He was speaking as the chief guest at the foundation stone laying of a new building and prize giving ceremony of annual sports of East Bakolia Government Primary School. Process is on to remove shortage of teachers, supply textbooks and furniture and increase number of educational institutes, he said. Lawmaker Shamsul Haque Chowdhury and Assistant District Primary Education Officer Nasrin Sultana were the special guests at the ceremony chaired by the school management committee President Emdad Ullah. Chittagong Press Club former general secretary Kalim Sarwar, Headmaster M Bahadur Alam, the management committee member Nazrul Islam and guardian Ahmed Sharif also spoke at the ceremony. Cuet cultural programme held
A cultural programme titled 'Silposattar ekattota' was held at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) on the occasion of the 10th anniversary and reunion of Joyodhoni, a non-political cultural organisation, on Friday. Cuet Vice Chancellor Dr Shyamol Kanti Bishwas inaugurated the programme as the chief guest through leading a rally in the morning. The programmes included discussion, art exhibition, kite festival, cake festival and Mehedi (dying with Henna) festival. Caritas Chittagong observed Caritas Sunday with the theme "Justice in Word and Action" here on Sunday. Marking the day that aims at inspiring people to participate in charity works, a discussion was held at Caritas Chittagong regional office. Speakers at the discussion emphasised eliminating discrimination and injustice from every sphere of the society to ensure justice and equality for the deprived. Md Saifullh, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General), Chittagong attended the programme as the chief guest while James Gomes, regional director of Caritas Chittagong, delivered the welcome speech. Terminated workers and employees laid a siege in front of the head office of Ispahani Group at Agrabad commercial area to protest the move for setting up a container terminal replacing Victory Jute Mill. The workers in association with local people organised the siege programme on Sunday under the banner of Illegal Container Yard Building Resistance Committee. They came in procession all the way from Uttar (north) Kattoli in Pahartali to Agrabad before laying the siege to Ispahani Group head office in the morning. They said construction of container yard would cause suffering to a lot of local people from whom the land was acquired to set up the mill. Besides, a container on Dhaka-Chittagong, just at the entry point of the port city, would surely create a serious congestion and seriously hamper plying of vehicles along the highway. They demanded immediate step to stop the move for container yard and reopening of the shut down mill. Protirodh Committee Chief Adviser Khorshed Alam Sujan, Senior Joint Convener Md Lokman Hossain, Member Secretary Harun-Ur-Rashid, Member Md Kamal Uddin, City Jatiya Sramik League leaders Mahbubul Alam, Abdul Majed Chowdhury, Sekander Sarder and Sheikh Ahmad also spoke at the rally.
