Jute trade is manipulated by local touts and middlemen while the farmers are deprived. Farmers grow jute each year with the hope that it would give enough to survive the whole year round but they are never able to benefit from growing jute. They never get proper price. Local touts and middlemen have been controlling the trade and fixing price for both the farmers and jute mills. Touts and middlemen are benefiting out of the trade. During July to September, price of jute was 1,200 taka to 1,300 taka per maund which was sold at Tk 2,500 in Khulna region last week (The daily Prothom Alo published the news on 18 March). Those locals and middlemen are illegally trading jute abroad for more profit. But we should protect our farmers' interest. The authorities concerned have clearly failed to control the activities of touts and middlemen.
