Trial of war criminals
The AL government's announcement to try war criminals is certainly a milestone in our history. The people of Bangladesh, especially the young generation of the country, have been eagerly waiting to see the punishment of those criminals (they are not only collaborators, criminals too!). We can justify the punishment for a variety of reasons, but I particularly focus on two reasons for this:
1. The political parties, especially the one which has cooperated with these criminals for years would not be able to claim next time that it is the AL who did not punish the criminals (as if they were all for the trial of these criminals and the AL was trying hard to protect the criminals). Those groups should now welcome the government move to try them.
2. Through the trial of the war criminals, we can demonstrate that we have not forgotten our history of freedom and we acknowledge the sacrifice that the martyrs had made in 1971, mostly because of these criminals' active involvement in killing, looting, raping and cooperating with the Pakistani army to do the same.
Although it has been noticed for some time that some people argue to focus on more persistent problems such as food, shelter and security of the poor people in Bangladesh and forget the idea of punishing someone for some criminal activity that happened more than 35 years ago. But by punishing the criminals we can demonstrate that "we care for both our parents who had given birth to us some 40-50 years back (That's a history though!!), as well as our children (who are presently living with us)”. It would be really selfish to take care of children only and forget the parents...because that is past... Even the Westerners who are more concerned with the present would not endorse this idea of forgetting the past!
