The whole nation celebrated the 39th anniversary of independence of Bangladesh with festivity remembering the supreme sacrifice of the valiant sons of this soil who laid down their lives to snatch away the red sun of freedom fighting against the Pakistani occupation army and their collaborators. They fought under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation. It is the right time for the people of Bangladesh to ponder over some critical issues while the whole nation is divided into many 'isms' since the inception of 1971 but now when the govt is starting the trial of war criminals, the people from all walks of life should raise their voice and come forward to eradicate the curse of the nation. The people of Bangladesh are anxiously waiting for the trial of war criminals while the prime minister of the country has already approved it. The Pakistani occupation army and their collaborators launched barbaric operations like killing, looting, raping on the general people of the country. The war criminals MUST NOT GO UNPUNISHED.

It is sad and frustrating to watch and to listen to press conferences and the debates on the trial of war criminals on the electronic media. In the name of freedom of expression and information, at least on two TV channels, I had the opportunity to watch on the present status of the proceedings of the trial in political and public perceptions. Here, first of all I would make reference to the press conference of the secretary general of the Jamaat. I fail to understand why it was so necessary for a particular, believed to be pro-liberation, media, to report the events with so much details which would only confuse the new generation as the media failed to put up video clips or paper clippings from March '71. This would definitely produce evidence of the guilt. They tortured and killed millions of men, women and children during liberation war. Now they are taking help of a known hostile country just to make sure that they can escape the trial under the cover of that country. However, we can say that we do not enjoy such a press conference either in the name of freedom of expression or freedom of information. We feel further tortured. Nevertheless, the second one was quite moderate but also failed to show follow up clippings for total perception of history. Quadir, California USA
