Think sensibly

P Bhattacharya, Gulshan 2, Dhaka
Human civilization survived & flourished for the last 5,000 years, since the era of Babylonia and Egyptian Faros, however, we started destroying our mother nature since the era of industrialization in less than 100 years! Global warming, widespread pollution and depleted fossil fuel threats are looming large. The human race never faced so many challenges since their existence on earth. Any country's sustainability and growth depends on protecting the environment and natural resources, it is more important in a densely populated country like Bangladesh. I found very little enthusiasm from the government to educate and take measures for saving our mother earth. It is not only the government's responsibility but also the responsibility of the civil society and the media. I arrived in Dhaka only last week, while coming from the airport I was pained to see the mindless construction activities going on encroaching natural wetlands and destroying the water bodies. These are so important to maintain the groundwater level, flood water management, micro organism of earth and maintaining natural flora & fauna. Multistoried building are constructed by cutting down grown up trees, some of them are fruit bearing trees, like mango and jackfruit etc. We forget that these green trees are our Lungs, we need them more & more in Dhaka, we need to think beyond our nose & keep something for our next generation, which is essential for our own survival & existence. Despite having 100% power back-up, I Switch off air conditioner in hotel for at least 5 6 hours daily. I & my family make sure to turn off light, fan every time we go out of the room even for short duration. You save electricity, fossil fuel and air pollution. I have released office car, and go to office on foot. It make sense, when I found that coming from Gulshan-2 to Gulshan-1 takes 40 minutes in car (Apprx 2 KM drive) & if I walk it takes not more than 15 minutes. It is a no brainer to anybody, if he/she is willing to tone down his or her so called “status” and ego.
