Fair held to raise fundBangladesh Federation of University Women (BFUW) organised a daylong fund raising fair at District Shilpakala Academy, Chittagong on Saturday. Begum Runu Siddiqui, president of Islamic Pathagar and Centre for Disables Concern (CDC), inaugurated the fair to raise funds for BFUW that undertakes different charitable programmes like free Friday clinic and legal aid programme. BFUW Chairman Ruseli Rahman Mahmud and Secretary General Nasima Banu and other members of the organisation were present. A total of 15 stalls participated in the fair displaying handmade jeweleries, food items, readymade garments, sarees, shalwar-kameezes and other household items. Pahartali School reunion held A two-day reunion of former students of Pahartali Railway School ended on the school premises on Saturday. Former Students Forum of the school organised the reunion for the third time where many former students participated amid festivity and fanfare. Dr Ziaul Karim presided over the inaugural ceremony moderated by Dr Gazi Saleh Uddin. Captain Habibur Rahman, principal officer of Mercantile Marine Department in Chittagong (MMD) and Captain Zillur Rahman Bhuiyan were elected chairman and Honorary Secretary of Nautical Institute, Bangladesh (NIB). The local chapter of Nautical Institute -- a UK-based professional body of mariners of international standard, elected its chairman and honorary secretary at a meeting at a local hotel on Friday. National Institute has been working in 45 countries through 70 branches to ensure safe vessel movement and pollution-free marine environment, said the sources. Nautical Institute, Bangladesh has some 150 members at its two branches in Dhaka and Chittagong, they said. Call to implement anti-tobacco law
Speakers at a workshop called upon the non-government anti-tobacco organisations to work side by side with the government to help proper implementation of Tobacco Control Act. They made the call at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day national workshop jointly organised by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) and Progna -- an advocacy organisation, on Monday to enhance capacity for developing a smoke-free environment. The workshop was organised at the Human Resources Development Office of YPSA in association with donor agency Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, The Union and Bomberg Initiative. Deputy Secretary Md Rafiqul Islam of Health and Family Welfare Ministry was the chief guest at the ceremony where Senior Assistant Secretary Nasrin Mukti and National Tobacco Control Cell Coordinator Dr Iqbal Kabir were the special guests with YPSA Chief Executive Md Arifur Rahman in the chair. Floret, a pre-school and daycare centre, started its journey in city's Lalkhan Bazar area on Friday. Poet Abul Momen, also resident editor of the Prothom Alo, inaugurated the centre. A discussion was also held with the Floret Principal Nasima Siraji in the chair. Prof Bhuiyan Iqbal, writer Prof Ferdous Ara Alim, artist Dilara Begum Joly and Chittagong Bar Association former general secretary Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury spoke at the discussion. Two mobile courts of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in separate anti-adulteration and fraudulence drives realised Tk 62, 000 from 12 business firms of Chittagong metropolitan area and Khagrachhari district on Monday. One of the mobile courts led by Executive Magistrate Fiznur Rahman in a drive in Madarbari area in the city fined Master Bakery and Confectionery, Mahfuzur Rahman Bakery and Hazi Bakery Tk 10,000, Tk 15,000 and Tk 5,000 respectively for running business without BSTI licences, sources said. The same court in another drive in Muradpur area fined Mecca Hotel, Cafee Shahenshah and Champakoli Hotel and Restaurant Tk 5,000, Tk 5,000 and Tk 10, 000 respectively for serving substandard foods in an unhygienic environment. Meanwhile, another mobile court led by Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam fined six jewellers Tk 12, 000 for using bhori scale in Khagrachhari. The fines amounting Tk 62,000 were realised in 12 cases filed in these connections. BSTI officials assisted the mobile courts during the drives, said the sources.
